There once was a li’l brown boy…

who never imagined that after growing up in a quiet Texas town that he’d end up living in New York City, getting to travel the world telling under-reported stories across so many mediums.

But he did.
I have.
And that’s just the beginning…

In this photo, just to the left, sat one of those boxy, wood-encased TVs. That’s where I’d watch:

MTV, The Little Mermaid, Cable Tele-Evangelists, Michael Jordan, Winnie Cooper…

Sitting there floor-side, wide-eyed is how I learned the immersive power of story. And how to tell them well…

Later, I’d end up at a local Texas community college. Of course I dropped out. Again and again.

Then it was off to Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This time sticking it out at Hunter College. That’s where I learned how to read and write like a fiend.

I crossed to Europe after looking for adventure. Everything I found and experienced, I put down on paper.

Into stories about love affairs blossoming on the side of Spanish Mountaintops. Product copy for different companies around the globe. Even original musicals that’d be performed across Spain and the UK.

Once back in New York I’d write original film scripts, short stories, branded content, along with writing, producing, editing, sound-designing for documentaries, experimental film and audio, even podcasts, and so much more…

Being this boy, one who was raised by pop-culture storytelling and this almost insatiable drive to learn, make, and try, it’s hard for me to know what to call myself. To know who I am…

Am I writer?
I mean I am writing this right now.

Am I copywriter?
I have done that.

Am I a graphic designer?
People have paid me to be.

Am I producer?
Whatever the f*** that means, sure I guess.

Am I a filmmaker?
You get the bit by now.

I’ll just say this. My name’s Remoy Philip.
I’m a writer. A thinker. A maker.
And a damn good one at that.

I’ll let the press coverage and recent work do the rest of the talking:

What do a filmmaker, a fashion CEO, and a farmer have in common? They’re episodes I got the chance to produce searching out climate  change solutions from each of their experiences.

Producer

A four-part episodic documentary connecting Indian theatre- activists, Palestinian students, migrant Californian farmworkers, and a NYC labor union. One that my editorial vision and team-building chops brought to life.

Executive Producer

How did The Jinx filmmakers discover Robert Durst’s shocking confession? And what actually happened next? I got the chance to make those revelations through episodes I produced that got some awards attention along the way.

Producer

Did I write and report on histories about Batman? One on lesser-known badass Black abolitionists? Even took the  mic to host a couple on gender discrimination? Yes, yes, and yes. Oh yeah— I also notched in one that landed as  2022’s top episode.

Reporter - Producer

How does PETA get people to give a damn? Well, it brings in legendary filmmaker Mary Harron to direct a terrifying short film. And guess who stepped in to turn all the knobs when it came to final color, design, and sound.

Sound Design | Color Correction

What’s a serendipitous not to mention random way for you to get to Sundance and SxSW? Well answer your phone when it rings and just happen to be in LA to show up for a final sound mixing session. All in a day’s work.

Associate Producer

The pandemic was such a specific, liminal time. One that begged to be documented in a way that met the moment. That’s why when the audio festival OnAirFest put out a call for experimental audio, I jumped at the chance to compose and produce a one-of-a-kind audio-collage to try and capture it.

For three plus years I’ve sat on multiple film juries hashing it out over what films and documentary series from around the globe are meeting the highest standards when it comes to documentary storytelling.

Festival Juror

Can you make the connections between little league baseball, indigenous tribes in Canada, and porn? I have. By putting a magnifying glass to this thing we call  gender and bringing all that I find to life for your ears.

Producer

When NYC’s institution for the documentary arts— Union Docs —decided to put on it’s first audio-documentary residency in 2021, it needed residents. So they came-a-calling, and I packed my bags.

Documentary Residency

Making an international feature-length doc, one that’s truly independent, let’s just say that producer hat comes with a lot of responsibilities. What an affirming role that played out as. Because in the end that job became to make it possible to show on the big screen, stories of young Palestinians overcoming.

Producer

Ever wish you had a peak-TV level show but one made specifically for your phone? Well that’s what I did. Meaning I wrote, directed, and produced one exclusively for your phone for the VRT app . And no biggie: it also won some awards attention on the festival circuit.
